OUTER EAST REGION – JUNIOR LEADERSHIP PROGRAM The Outer East Metro Region in conjunction with the City of Knox, established the Junior Leadership Program in 2006/07. The aim of the Program is to provide the Junior Cricket captains & vice-captains with necessary skills required to undertake the roles they been entrusted with. The Outer East Region is made up of players that live within the Municipalities of Knox, Maroondah & Yarra Ranges & comprises of teams that participate within the FTGDCA, RDCA & YVCA as well as the VSDCA & ECA. The Junior Leadership Program comprises two sections: • Junior Leadership Program Information Night • Junior Leadership Program Award The Junior Leadership Program Night will be held on 24 November 2006 at the Knox Council Municipal Offices. The main aims of the evening are to provide Junior leaders with expert presenters to discuss issues of cricket leadership, involving all facets of the game i.e. Batting, Bowling, Fielding, The Spirit of Cricket. Presenters will include the Senior Coaches of both the Regions aligned Premier Clubs, Ringwood Cricket Club & Hawthorn–Monash University Cricket Club as well as a Representative from Cricket Victoria. The Junior Leadership Award has been formulated to give recognition to those who endeavour to embrace the ethos of the program & practically apply its messages. The criteria for the Award will include demonstrated examples of leadership such as; providing an enjoyable environment for team-mates to play, showing respect to opposition, acceptance of umpiring decisions, leading by example – performing for the team, adhering to the Spirit of Cricket as well attendance at the JLP Night. All Clubs within the Region will be able to nominate 1 Junior Leader from within its ranks to be eligible to win the Award. 2007/08 Thiteen year-old Rob Boxell, from Yarra Junction Cricket Club in the Yarra Valley Cricket Association, has been named the 2007/08 winner of the Outer East Junior Leadership Program Award, established by the Outer East Cricket Region, Knox Council and the Victorian Metropolitan Cricket Union. Youth Advisory Committee Chairperson, Cr Debbie Field, said, “the program aims to help junior cricketers realise the important role they play as leaders of their peers and encourages them to play the game in a manner adhering to the ‘Spirit of Cricket’. Each of the 70 clubs within the Outer East had the opportunity to nominate a junior captain and Rob's overall leadership & respect for the game saw him named the unanimous winner. Rob was recently presented with his trophy by Regional Council Chairman, Mr David Beatty. Mr Beatty said "Rob shows all the qualities that we like to see our young players, & specifically captains, have in the modern game. His ability to create an enjoyable atmosphere for his team mates, his respect for opposition players & officials, as well his leadership in contributing to the sides performance, have made him a more than worty winner." As part of Rob's prize, he will spend a day at the MCG, in the inner sanctum of the Victorian Bushrangers, meeting the team and coaching staff, spending time on the ground assisting in the warm up and spending the day in the rooms with the team as they battle against the Queensland Bulls on March 7.
